About Aligned Midwifery

It is my absolute joy, pleasure and (healthy) obsession to practice midwifery in partnership with women, birthing people, their families and chosen networks to support the optimisation of the biological, psychological, social and cultural processes of childbirth and early new born life.

Before I became a midwife I ran a successful business for many years in healthcare research. Around the time of my first pregnancy however, a series of profound life events called me to take up the wonderful profession of midwifery.

After qualifying as a midwife I honed many clinical skills working for a number of years within the NHS (mainly within a delivery suite setting 'catching babies'). Although I loved many elements of my work and valued working alongside some wonderful colleagues, much of my time within the NHS was marked by frustration. Understaffing, inadequate funding and overstretched services constantly prevented me from providing the level of care and giving the amount of time I believed women and birthing individuals truly deserved. I knew that practising outside of the NHS would enable me to work in a way that best aligned with my own personal and professional midwifery values and thus, Aligned Independent Midwifery was born—a practice founded on the principles of personalised, compassionate and respectful care which is delivered from the heart, not against the clock.

In my personal life I have been lucky enough to have received care from a wonderful Independent Midwife in my second pregnancy and so I know first hand what a difference IMs make to every aspect of the childbearing journey. My IM helped me to address previous trauma, to see myself as whole (not just a list of obstetric risk factors) and to empower myself to experience a wonderful, healing labour and birth with my second son. It is my life goal as an Independent Midwife to help others feel the same.

When I am not busy midwifing, massaging, thinking about birth, talking about birth or writing about birth, I can be found snuggled up with my cats, absorbed in a good podcast (probably about birth) or escaping to the Welsh wilderness with my partner and our two lovely little sons in our rooftop tent.

  • I will take the time to listen to you and I will treat you as the unique individual that you are.

  • I will take the time to explore, share and discuss with you available evidence that you can use to inform your decision making throughout your journey. I will support you to consider the risks, benefits and alternatives in all situations.

  • Your bodily autonomy is absolutely paramount. I will respect your boundaries and your right to give or withhold consent at all times.

  • If your needs fall outside out the scope of midwifery practice or outside of my skillset, I will refer you to the appropriate services to ensure your evolving needs are met.

  • I will not pressure or coerce you into doing anything you do not want to do.

  • I will not judge your decisions or make assumptions about your preferences.

  • I will be honest with you.

  • I will listen to you and get to know what really matters to you - your hopes, dreams, priorities, fears and plans.

  • I will hold space for you to feel whatever you need to feel.

  • I will work alongside you to ensure that however your pregnancy and birth plays out, you are nurtured, supported and always at the centre of all decisions.
